Shaq Goodwin scores a team-high 23 points for the Tigers
STORRS, Conn. - Trailing by eight with just over six minutes to play in the game, the Memphis Tigers chipped away at the deficit, and eventually took a one-point lead with just under a minute left in the game; however, the UConn Huskies drew a foul on the next possession, and then made six straight free throws to lead by five. Memphis once again fought back, and had a shot at the buzzer to tie the game fall just off the mark in an 81-78 Husky win.
Shaq Goodwin, after being held to just four points in the first half due to foul trouble, erupted for 19 points in the second half, scoring 23 for the game, hitting 6-of-9 shots from the field and 11-of-12 from the charity stripe. Dedric Lawson was the fourth and final member of the Memphis squad to reach double-figures with 10 points.
The Tigers out-rebounded the Huskies 42-to-29, and were led by Tarrant Jr.'s season-high-tying six boards. Lawson led the team with four assists, as Memphis had 15 assists on 22 made baskets for the contest.

With the Tigers holding onto a four-point lead with 5:52 to play, Connecticut ran off seven straight points to lead by three at 32-29 a minute and a half later. Memphis tied the score again on a Burrell free throw, until the Huskies used a 5-0 Daniel Hamilton run to put the hosts ahead by five; however, a Lawson three-pointer cut the deficit to two heading into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half UConn led by as many as eight with 6:07 to play; setting the stage for the Tiger comeback. Memphis used a combination of strong post play from Goodwin, and timely long-range shooting, tying the score for the sixth time of the game on a pair of Goodwin free throws with 1:32 to play.
After a pair of free throws from UConn's Shonn Miller, Avery Woodson drained a three-pointer with 52 seconds to play, giving Memphis its first lead since the first half. On the next possession Tarrant was called for a blocking foul, with Sterling Gibbs knocking down both of his free throw tries. Missed jumpers on the next two possessions, which were followed by two free throws each by UConn saw the hosts take to a five-point lead with nine seconds to play.
Burrell followed with a three-pointer with three seconds left to drop the gap to two, and a missed free throw from Daniel Hamilton gave Memphis an opportunity to tie the score. A perfect full-court throw from former baseball player Caleb Wallingford set the table; however, Lawson's game-tying shot attempt missed just left at the buzzer, giving UConn the three-point victory.
