Men’s Tennis Falls to No. 28 Oklahoma State in Opener
Jan 18, 2016 | Men's Tennis
Tigers split sets on other three courts, but not able to finish.
MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis men's tennis team (0-1) are starting the spring dual season with three straight matches against ranked opponents, including a Monday match against No. 28 ranked Oklahoma State (3-0). The visitors from Stillwater jumped out to a quick start in doubles play and used the depth of their lineup to close out the 4-0 win in non-conference play.
"I think this was a really good college tennis match," Head Coach Paul Goebel said. "We knew we had a tough first test for us with today's match, but we needed it. We stay right up against good competition with Louisville and the ITA Kick-Off Weekend next weekend. I think we saw a lot of good things from our young team here. We battled back in some matches and have learned some things we need to work on before the next match."
Oklahoma State jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on the strength of their top-10 ranked doubles team of Arjun Kadhe and Julian Cash. The duo grabbed a 6-1 win at No. 1 and kept the Tigers from building any energy on the other courts. A 6-2 win at No. 2 sealed the doubles point and Memphis served for a win at No. 3 doubles, but was broke and unable to finish the match with the point decided.
In singles play, OSU grabbed wins at five and six singles to build a 3-0 lead, leaving all four courts in the Stadium in contention. At No. 1 singles, Memphis was trying to answer the question of who would be atop the Tigers' singles line up for the first time in three seasons with the graduation of Connor Glennon, who won at No. 1 last year against OSU for the Tigers. Sophomore Ryan Peniston drew the call to the top of the lineup and dropped his opening set 6-1 before getting back on balance in the second set. Meanwhile, Andrew Watson built a 5-4 lead at No. 2 singles, but was caught by No. 112 ranked Arjun Kadhe and dropped his opening set 7-6.
Kai Lemke and freshman Chris Patzanovsky had earned first set wins in their respective matches at 3 and 4 singles, and when Peniston turned the momentum around and won his second set, 6-4, it looked like the Tigers would have a chance to try for a 4-3 win if they could claim all of the stadium court matches.
But Kadhe was determined not to get beat by the Tigers for a second straight season and used a 6-4 win in the second set at No. 2 to give the Cowboys the deciding match point for the 4-0 win. None of the other three matches on the stadium courts would finish with the match decided.
Memphis now moves on to win-and-advance mode with the ITA Kick-Off Weekend starting this Saturday. Memphis will face No. 36 ranked Louisville, Saturday, at 9 a.m. (ET) at the University of Georgia. The second match at the Georgia courts will feature number seven ranked Georgia against number 54 ranked UC Santa Barbara at 1 p.m. (ET). The two winners of those matches will face off in the championship at 5 p.m. (ET), Sunday, while the consolation match will be played at 9 a.m. (ET), Sunday. The champion of the four-team bracket advances to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in New York City in February.
