SIUE Hands Memphis 2-0 Loss
Sep 06, 2015 | Men's Soccer
Two second half goals too much for Tigers to overcome
SIU Edwardsville scored two goals in the second half to hand Memphis a 2-0 loss Sunday at Ralph Korte Stadium in Edwardsville, Ill. The Tigers, who dropped to 0-4 this season, will next head to nationally ranked Kentucky, Saturday, September 12 at 6:00 p.m.
"It was a very complete first half I thought," head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "We created more opportunities but from the start of the game to the finish our decision making with shooting and crossing was as bad I've seen from us. Our soccer IQ was very low. When you make those decisions they are going to come back on you."
After a tough start to the season, Mulrooney and his staff changed a few things up with the team. Jabari Newton and Kit Huddleston made their first starts of the season at right back and left back respectively.
The Tigers have played well in the first half of games this season and been level at halftime of each game. But it was a similar scenario again, as SIUE was able to break Memphis down in the second half.
"We mixed some things up today, some for the better and some for the worse. I put Carlos (Hurtado) in an attacking midfield role because of his technical ability and it worked in some instances but not in others. We changed up our formation a bit. I think it would be foolish to keep doing the same things over and over and keep losing," said Mulrooney.
Goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui was reinserted into the starting lineup and made eight saves in the match, including a save of a penalty kick in the first half.
"I thought (Cody Uzcategui) had a solid game. He saved the penalty kick, which was huge for us. From the sideline it didn't look like he had any chance on the goals. He also came up with some big saves," Mulrooney said.
Both of the Cougars' goals were scored by Devyn Jambga on assists from Mohamed Awad.
Memphis doesn't return home to Mike Rose Soccer Complex until Sept. 26 when the Tigers host UCF at 7:30 p.m. for Alumni Night. The women's soccer team will host Gonzaga at 5:00 p.m. prior to the men's game.
