Memphis and No. 15 Kentucky Draw 0-0
Sep 12, 2015 | Men's Soccer
The Tigers held 10-man Kentucky to a tie in double overtime
Facing the tough task of playing No. 15 Kentucky on the road, Memphis put together its most complete performance of the season and held out for a 0-0 draw in double overtime Saturday night. The Wildcats were forced to play with 10-men from the 69th minute on after a red card.
"We didn't get the win tonight but it's progress in the right direction," Memphis head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "I think this was the most complete performance we've had from our team start to finish and that includes an extra 20 minutes in overtime. Overall I'm happy. This is a hard place to play and this is something to build on."
Kentucky had a player sent off in the 69th minute when Stefan Stojkovic received a red card in an altercation with the Tigers' Josh Burnett. Burnett received a yellow card for his part in the incident.
With the man advantage for the final 21 minutes of regulation and the two 10-minute overtime periods, Memphis dominated possession and had several scoring chances. The Tigers finished with 17 shots forced six saves by Kentucky goalkeeper Callum Irving.
"We were just able to keep possession in the second half. In the past games we were coughing the ball up and being punished for it. Tonight we were patient in building the ball from the back and when a gap opened up we were able to move forward. We are still lacking a bit in the final third but beggers can't be choosers and we'll take our tie against a tough opponent on the road," said Mulrooney.
Memphis goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui played all 110 minutes and was called on to make just two saves.
Kentucky had an astounding 15 corner kick opportunities but couldn't manage to convert them into goals. The Tigers had just four corner kicks.
The difficult schedule continues for Memphis with another trip to a nationally ranked opponent, Louisville, next week.
"We've got 10 days now to rest a little bit. We'll sit down with the guys and just talk about how we build on this. Kentucky just played Louisville so we have the tape of that," Mulrooney said.
The Tigers and Cardinals face off Tuesday, September 22 at 7:00 p.m.
