Ranked Louisville Overwhelms Memphis

Cardinals score three second-half goals en route to the win
Memphis was unable to contain the No. 24 Louisville Cardinals as they lost 4-0 in the Tigers' final tune-up for conference play. Just as they have done all season, the Tigers (0-5-1) started the match strong against a tough opponent but were unable to keep it up in the second half.
"We started off well but as the game went on for some reason it got worse and worse for us," Memphis head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "They are a relentless team that if you make errors they will punish you. Cody Uzcategui made a couple stops early that kept us in the game. We need to regroup but we're ready for conference play to start."
After a strong defensive performance in the first 30 minutes, Louisville sophomore Tim Kubel broke down the right wing and served in a cross that was headed home by freshman Tate Schmitt from six yards out to open the scoring.
Just seconds later, Memphis goalkeeper Cody Uzcategui palmed a shot away to prevent the Tigers from going down 2-0 before halftime.
Louisville upped the pressure to start the second half and quickly added to their lead. Less than two minutes into the second half, Schmitt doubled the Cardinals' advantage with another headed goal. The cross came from senior Ben Strong down the right side again.
Seconds later, Strong sent Kubel in on goal who blasted a shot into the net to make the score 3-0 early in the second half. Strong was able to add a goal to his two assists as he firmly put the game out of reach in the 71st minute, making the score 4-0.
Uzcategui finished the match with three saves. Louisville goalkeeper Theo Jamilloux made four saves to keep the Tigers off the board.
Memphis will host UCF Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Mike Rose Soccer Complex for the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
"We are looking forward to playing at home. We have gotten some experience from these games and we are a young team. There's nothing like playing at home and we are excited about the double header with the women's team in front of our alumni," Mulrooney said.
Saturday's home match will be part of an "Alumni Weekend" double header with the women's team hosting Gonzaga at 5:00 p.m. prior to the start of the men's game.
