MEMPHIS – The University of Memphis volleyball team (7-3) will host the Tiger Invitational, Friday and Saturday, in their final non-conference matches of the 2015 schedule. Memphis will welcome Austin Peay (4-8), Southern Miss (12-1) and Mississippi State (7-3) for a trio of matches, beginning with a 7 p.m. match against Austin Peay, Friday.
"This is our strongest overall tournament," Head Coach April Jauregui said. "Not to discredit the other tournaments we've been in, because each tournament has had a really strong team, but in terms of opponent per opponent, there's no easy ones. There's really no easy ones from here on out. With 20 conference games and the three games this weekend, this is going to be a good test for our team. Can we put a good product on the floor on Friday night, then come back and deal with two games on Saturday. If we can do a good job this weekend, it's really going to prepare us going in to conference the following week."
Austin Peay comes in to the Friday night match up against the Tigers looking to snap a two-match losing streak. The Mocs lost to host Chattanooga in a tournament last weekend, 3-0, then lost to visiting North Dakota, 3-1, on Wednesday.
Southern Miss comes in to the tournament with a 12-1 overall record. The Golden Eagles fell to host Ole Miss, 3-0, but also beat Belmont, 3-1. Memphis lost to Belmont, 3-2, in a road game earlier this fall. Southern Miss already has one win on the season over an American Athletic Conference foe, downing Tulsa, 3-1, in the Bama Bash in Tuscaloosa.
Mississippi State is 7-3 and faced No. 1 ranked Penn State last weekend, falling 3-0, at the Notre Dame tournament. The losses to host Notre Dame and Penn State were just the second and third of the year for the Bulldogs, who will face Southern Miss on Friday at 4 p.m. to start the tournament off.
Memphis is hoping some of the excitement from the team's come-from-behind 3-2 win over Little Rock is still in the Elma Roane gym. Sophomore Oluchi Agomuo led Memphis in that game with 15 kills, while McKenzie Hayes added 14. Senior Lindsey Purvis helped backstop the defense with a career-best 29 kills, helping her earn all-tournament honors. Junior Summer Morgan also earned all-tournament honors for a second straight week while playing in her first career Memphis home matches.
Memphis will open conference play on Wednesday, facing Cincinnati, at 7 p.m (ET).
