Hayes’ Career-High 18 Kills Powers Tigers to 3-1 Win
Sep 18, 2015 | Women's Volleyball
Tigers move to 8-3 on the year.
MEMPHIS – Junior right side hitter McKenzie Hayes downed a career-high 18 kills, adding nine digs, in a 3-1 win (25-14, 21-25, 25-21, 25-16) over Austin Peay (4-9), Friday night. Catlin Lilly added 15 kills and 13 digs, while Kendall Seering served up a career best four aces in the Memphis (8-3) win.
"It was great to have those two tonight," Head Coach April Jauregui said. "We were going to keep setting McKenzie as long as they would leave it open and it's great to see Catlin just continue playing consistently good ball. But we're going to need more than two players clicking tomorrow against Southern Miss and Mississippi State. Those are two really good teams."
Memphis got out to a quick 1-0 lead thanks to a strong service game. The Tigers served up four aces in the first set alone and the Governors' could only scramble to get an offense going, hitting .100 on 30 attacks.
But the stats swung the other way in the second set. Austin Peay hit .414 and held Memphis to a .250 hitting clip in a 25-21 win that saw 15 tie scores and three lead changes, knotting it up at 1-1 at the break.
In the locker room, Austin Peay made the defensive adjustment on Hayes, which opened the door for Lilly to get warmed up. The junior downed five kills on 10 swings with no errors, hitting .500 and powering the offense to a 25-21 third set win.
The Memphis blockers got going in the fourth game, posting four of the team's nine blocks in that set. Seering also served up her fourth ace of the night and the Tigers grabbed the 25-16 fourth set and their eighth win of the year.
Ashley Slay led Austin Peay with 12 kills and five total blocks. April Adams led the defense with 25 digs.
Four Tigers had double-digit digs in the win, including 14 from Oluchi Agomuo and 15 from Lindsey Purvis. Veronica Zimmerman finished with a game-high 37 assists and 10 digs.
Memphis faces former Conference USA foe Southern Miss, Saturday, at 2 p.m. In the last meeting between the two teams, former Tiger Altrese Hawkins set the Memphis school career kill record (1,806) in a 3-2 road win in Hattiesburg.
Memphis plays its final non-conference game of the season Saturday at 7 p.m., facing Mississippi State. Memphis won the last meeting between the two schools, 3-2, at the Mississippi State tournament last year. Former Tiger Aleksandra Petronijevic set the Memphis career digs record (1,905) in that game.
Both opponents will look to return the road win favors to the Tigers Saturday.
Memphis opens American Athletic Conference play, Wednesday, at Cincinnati.
