The No. 5 Tigers took two-of-three from the No. 4 Bulls earlier this season
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The fifth-seeded Memphis Tigers will play No. 4 USF in the opening game of the American Athletic Conference Baseball Championship Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. (CT) at Bright House Field.
Memphis enters the tournament having lost its last three weekend series. The Tigers were in a tie for first place with three weeks remaining but ended up as the fifth-seed in the tournament.
Tigers won the series over the Bulls earlier this season in Memphis. USF took the opening game of the series, behind starting pitcher Jimmy Herget, but Memphis rebounded to win the next two and take the series.
Memphis and USF are on the same side of the double-elimination bracket as the regular-season champion and top-seed Houston and No. 8 Cincinnati. The winners of Tuesday's games get Wednesday off, while the losers will play in an elimination game Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m. (CT).
The Tigers fared well against both USF and Houston, but not against Cincinnati. Memphis took two-of-three from Houston in the first week of April. Cincinnati managed to win both series played against the Memphis Tigers, winning a pair of pivotal extra-inning games.
The Tuesday contest will be televised on CBS Sports Network with Carter Blackburn and Darryl Hamilton on the call.
The double-elimination bracket will play out to Sunday, with the championship final being televised on ESPNU with a Noon ET first pitch.
