Memphis Drops Series at UCF with 4-1 Loss
May 10, 2015 | Baseball
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Central Florida scored two runs in the second inning and it would be all the Knights needed to win the game, 4-1, and the series, 2-1.
The Tigers will be back in action Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. against Tennessee-Martin at USA Baseball Stadium in Millington, Tenn. Memphis will then close the regular season at home with a three-game series against Tulane starting Thursday.
Starting pitcher Connor Alexander allowed four runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings pitched. He struck out seven batters and issued just one walk. The loss dropped his record to 4-1 this season.
UCF grabbed an early lead when Tommy Williams started the second inning with a solo home run to left field. The Knights scored a second run in the inning after a pair of singles by Matt Diorio and Kam Gellinger.
Memphis had base runners in each of the first three innings but the Tigers were unable to capitalize. Zach Schritenthal singled with one out in the first but was erased on a double play. Carter White also singled with one out in the second but was stranded at first. Darien Tubbs lined a two-out single in the third before he was picked off to end the inning.
The Tigers got their first lead-off runner of the game on a single by Carter White in the top of the fifth. Memphis then got its first runner in scoring position when Nate Rupiper singled to move White to second base. That would be as much as the Tigers could muster in the fifth as a pop up on the infield ended the inning.
UCF added to its lead in the fifth after a lead-off double by JoMarcos Woods. Woods was sacrificed to third base and Dylan Moore delivered an RBI single to left field. Connor Alexander did well to get out of the inning with just one run scored.
The Tigers again got a lead-off runner on in the sixth as Darien Tubbs singled up the middle but again the Tigers were unable to score.
The Knights tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Gellinger doubled with one out off of Alexander to end his day. Reliever Blake Myers allowed a single to center field to make the score 4-0.
Myers finished the inning without allowing anyone else to reach. Craig Caufield pitched a scoreless eighth inning in relief with a strikeout.
Pinch-hitter Corey Chafin started the eighth with a hustling infield single and Darien Tubbs worked a walk to put two runners on with no outs. Zach Schritenthal legged out a fielder's choice ground ball to avoid a double play but it wouldn't matter as the UCF defense turned an inning-ending double play on the next batter.
Memphis would avoid being shut out for the first time this season as Tucker Tubbs started the top of the ninth with a double off the wall in left field. White drove him in with a double of his own. Brandon Montgomery and Nate Rupiper both singled to load the bases with one out but the Tigers wouldn't score again.
