MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Cincinnati scored four runs in the fourth inning and never trailed as they took the series opener over Memphis, 11-4, Friday night at FedExPark. The Tigers dropped to 9-7 in American Athletic Conference play but remain in a five-way tie for first place.
The Tigers will send Dylan Toscano to the mound in Game Two, Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
Prior to Saturday's first pitch, Memphis will retire the jersey of former player, assistant coach and head coach Jeff Hopkins. The Memphis native posted 239 career wins over eight seasons and led the Tigers to an NCAA Regional in 1994. He is the current head coach at Collierville High School and won a State Championship in 2013.
Also before Saturday's game is the Tiger Scholarship Fund Donor Day. All TSF Donors receive free admission to the game as well as free barbecue from Central BBQ at the tent set up by the left field deck. The party starts when the gates open at 1:00 p.m.
Colton Hathcock, making just his second career start, tossed a career-high seven innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits. He struck out six batters and walked just one.
The freshman right-hander allowed just four base runners outside of the Bearcats' four-run fourth inning. Cincinnati scored four runs on four hits and on error in the fourth.
Cincinnati put the game out of reach with two runs in the eighth inning and five runs in the ninth.
Memphis scored three runs on two hits and an error in the bottom of the ninth.
The Bearcats' four-run fourth came on their first four hits of the game. Kyle Mottice singled past Schritenthal at third base to start the fourth inning. Mottice proceeded to swipe second base before both Ian Happ and Devin Wenzel both hit RBI doubles. With two outs, Treg Haberkorn singled to drive in the third run in the inning. The Bearcats' center fielder stole second and third base and scored on errant throw.
Memphis right fielder Kane Barrow was 3-for-5, catcher Carter White was 2-for-3 and second baseman Brandon Montgomery was 2-for-3.
Cincinnati starting pitcher Ryan Atkinson pitched eight innings and picked up his fourth win of the season.
