Cincinnati Takes Series with 5-4 Win in 12 Innings
May 02, 2015 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Tucker Tubbs hit a game-tying home run to send the game into extra innings, but Memphis was unable to come out on top as they fell 5-4 to Cincinnati in 12 innings. The Tigers will try to salvage the series in the finale Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Cincinnati right fielder Ian Happ was 0-for-5 in the game until he hit a solo home run to lead off the top of the 12th inning. The run proved to be the game winner.
Memphis starter Dylan Toscano struck out a career-high 10 batters in six innings of work. He allowed just two runs on seven hits. He failed to pick up the win for the first time in five starts.
Darien Tubbs opened the ballgame with a solo home run to left field. The lead-off homer was the second of his career, with both coming against Cincinnati.
Cincinnati's starting pitcher, David Orndorff, managed just one out but issued walks to Zach Schritenthal and Tucker Tubbs, ending his day in the first inning.
Jake Little singled on the infield off of reliever Andrew Zellner before Carter White drove in the second run of the game on an RBI groundout.
Zellner was then lights out from the second through seventh innings. The Tigers had just three base runners over that stretch.
Cincinnati got a run back in the top of the third inning after a lead-off bloop single. Manny Rodriguez smacked a double into the gap in right-center to score the run. Dylan Toscano did well to get out of the jam and stranded a runner on third to end the inning.
The Bearcats tied the game in the top of the sixth on the first of three runs batted in by Treg Haberkorn.
Cincinnati got its first lead of the game in the top of the eighth on a two-run double by Haberkorn.
Tucker Tubbs had an answer, as he blasted his 14th homer of the season to tie the game back up in the bottom of the eighth.
Memphis had a chance in the bottom of the 12th when Brandon Montgomery led off with a single and was sacrificed to second base by Jake Overbey. Pinch-hitter Corey Chafin hit what would have been a game-tying double but the ball was ruled foul.
Blake Myers pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief and allowed two runs on one hit.
Craig Caufield logged four innings of relief and struck out three batters. He picked up his first loss of the season despite a solid outing. Nolan Blackwood retired the final two outs in the bottom of the 12th.
