MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Memphis used a big first inning to cruise to a 14-6 win over No. 14 Houston and even the series at one game apiece. The series-deciding rubber match is scheduled for Saturday at 12 Noon at FedExPark.
The Tigers came out firing on all cylinders and scored eight runs on eight hits and two Houston errors in the bottom of the first inning. Memphis totaled 18 hits in the game and scored runs in four different innings.
Darien Tubbs, Zach Schritenthal and Kane Barrow all reached base with no outs to start the ballgame.
Tucker Tubbs, who had been hitless in his last three games, drove them all in with a double into the gap in left-center field. The Houston centerfielder misplayed the ball, allowing Barrow to score from first.
After Tubbs moved to second on a ground out, Carter White drove him in with a single to center field. Another ground out moved White to second base and he crossed the plate after a single by Brandon Montgomery, who finished with the first four-hit game of his career.
Jake Overbey drove in Montgomery with a single to center field that chased Houston's starting pitcher Kyle Dowdy. Darien Tubbs greeted reliever Patrick Weigel with a single up the middle and Schritenthal followed with an RBI single to left field. Another error in the outfield allowed both runs to score on Schritenthal's single.
The eight runs and eight hits in one inning were both season highs for the Tigers.
Houston got a run back in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Campbell to score Chris Iriart, who tripled to lead off the top of the fourth inning. The Cougars plated another run after an error extended the inning. Brandon Grilli singled up the middle to score Connor Wong from second base.

A single that dropped just in foul territory moved Tubbs to third base and he scored on an RBI ground out by Chris Carrier. A single by Montgomery scored Carrier and ended Weigel's day on the mound. Reliever Jared Robinson got the Cougars out of the inning.
Iriart homered for Houston in the top of the fifth and in the top of the seventh. The Cougars also added two runs on three hits in the sixth. Houston scored in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Dylan Toscano picked up the win after starting and tossing five innings. He allowed three runs on five hits and struck out three batters. He improved his record to 4-1. Colin Lee relieved Toscano in the sixth inning and allowed two runs on three hits.
