Chafin Triple Gives Memphis 11-7 Win over Mississippi Valley
Apr 29, 2015 | Baseball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Corey Chafin ripped a two-run triple into the right-center gap to break up a 7-7 tie in the seventh and lead Memphis to an 11-7 victory over Mississippi Valley State Wednesday at FedExPark.
The Tigers' junior designated hitter finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Memphis (31-13, 9-6 American) will be back at home for a three-game league series against Cincinnati. The Bearcats are the only American opponent to win a series over the Tigers this season.
After going back-and-forth through the first five innings, Memphis turned to Blake Drabik out of the bullpen. The sophomore reliever pitched two solid innings and picked up his second win of the season. He struck out two batters and allowed one run on two hits.
Veteran relievers Blake Myers and Craig Caufield closed out the game with scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth.
The Delta Devils scored a run in each of the first two innings before Memphis put up four runs in the bottom of the second to jump out to a 5-2 lead.
Chafin and Jake Overbey both singled before Brandon Montgomery reached on an error to load the bases. Darien Tubbs drove in Chafin and Overbey with a single to left field and Zach Schritenthal plated Montgomery with a single up the middle. The fourth run of the inning came home on a fielder's choice ground out by Kane Barrow.
Mississippi Valley scored three runs on four hits in the top of the fourth inning. Collin Lee made way for reliever Matt Ferguson during the frame.
Lee, the starter, pitched the first three innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits. Ferguson allowed one run on three hits in two innings of work.
The two teams traded runs in the next few innings. Memphis scored one in the fourth and one in the sixth. MVSU scored a run in the fifth and a run in the seventh.
The Tigers were able to put the game away, due in large part to Chafin's triple, with four runs in the seventh.
Tyler Dixon walked and Carter White singled ahead of Chafin's triple. Jake Overbey doubled to drive in Chafin and Darien Tubbs double to score Overbey.
