Tigers Women's Basketball Hosts Undefeated Saint Louis Wednesday
Dec 01, 2015 | Women's Basketball
Match-up tips off at 7 p.m. (CT) at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After a thrilling last-second win over Southern Illinois Nov. 29, the University of Memphis women's basketball team looks to put the past in the past and focus on the next opponent – an undefeated Saint Louis squad.
The Tigers (4-2) host the Billikens (6-0) at 7 p.m. (CT) at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Saint Louis is off to its best start to a season since 1980-81 when it began that campaign 7-0. Tigers head coach Melissa McFerrin believes Wednesday's match-up with Saint Louis will be Memphis' toughest test to date.
"Saint Louis is in the Atlantic 10 Conference, which is a pretty good women's basketball league," said McFerrin. "Saint Louis has a lot of good, young talent and a lot of size.
"On a side note, Sadie Stipanovich plays for Saint Louis, and her dad, Steve, played at Missouri at the same time I played on the Missouri women's team. She is a very good post player.
"I told our players that Saint Louis may be the best team we play this season to date. They have depth and can spread this floor. They have significant post presence. We are going to have our hands full Wednesday."

Tigers Tidbits • Five Memphis Notes to Know
• Wednesday's game continues a three-game homestand for the Tigers, the longest of the 2015-16 season. Memphis started the three-game homestand Nov. 29 with a thrilling 61-58 victory over Southern Illinois. After Wednesday's contest, Memphis closes the homestand against nationally-ranked George Washington Sunday, Dec. 6. Sunday's game time is 1 p.m. (CT).
• Memphis holds a 25-4 all-time series lead over Saint Louis. The Tigers have won four straight and seven of the last eight meetings. Memphis won the last encounter in the 2012-13 campaign, a 65-58 win in St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 19, 2012. In games played in the Bluff City, the Tigers hold a 12-2 series lead. Memphis won the last match-up played in the city of Memphis, a thrilling 63-60 victory at FedExForum in the 2011-12 season opener (Nov. 11, 2011). The Billikens' last win in Memphis was a 71-60 victory in the 2002-03 season (Jan. 12, 2003).
• Former conference foes meet Wednesday as Memphis and Saint Louis once were members of Conference USA from 1995-2005. In those seasons, the two programs played 17 times, with Memphis holding a 13-4 lead in those match-ups.
• Senior Ariel Hearn was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll Nov. 30. In two games last week, she averaged 15.0 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals. Hearn hit the game-winning three-pointer with :02.3 on the clock to lift Memphis to a 61-58 win over Southern Illinois Nov. 29. She scored 12 of her 14 points in the final period vs. the Salukis. Hearn had 16 points and six rebounds in the 61-53 setback to Little Rock Nov. 27.
• Seniors Asianna Fuqua-Bey and Ariel Hearn played in the 100th games of their careers Nov. 29. Hearn is ranked in the top-10 on both the all-time starts and minutes played charts. Fuqua-Bey is just outside the top-10 on the Tigers career starts list.
• On Wednesday, Tiger Nation may see a familiar name on the Saint Louis roster – at least the last name. Sadie Stipanovich, a junior center, is the daughter of former University of Missouri standout and All-America Steve Stipanovich. In his collegiate career from 1979-83, Steve never played against Memphis. Another connection is that, while Steve was a member of the Missouri men's squad, Memphis head coach Melissa McFerrin was a member of the Missouri women's team at the same time from 1979-83.
Scouting Saint Louis
Saint Louis brings a perfect 6-0 record into Wednesday's game. The Billikens are one win shy of tying the program's best start, which is 7-0 by the 1979-80 and 1980-81 teams. The Billikens have a trio of double-figure scorers in Sadie Stipanovich (14.0 ppg), Jackie Kemph (13.5 ppg) and Jamesia Price (12.7 ppg). Stipanovich and Denisha Womack both lead Saint Louis on the glass with a 7.0 rebounding average. The Billikens are shooting nearly 75 percent from the charity stripe and are out-rebounding their foes by nearly a +6.0 margin. Head coach Lisa Stone is in her fourth season at Saint Louis.
