Tigers Tidbits/Five Notes To Know
• Memphis meets Georgetown for only the second time in its history. The first meeting came in 2014-15, and the Tigers posted a 63-46 victory over the Hoyas in Washington, D.C., Dec. 13, 2014.
• A Washington, D.C., reunion is happening this afternoon. Georgetown is located in Washington, D.C., and Tigers head coach Melissa McFerrin spent seven seasons in the nation's capital. Her first three years (1999-2001) was as an assistant coach and general manager of the WNBA's Washington Mystics. From 2005-08, McFerrin was American University's head coach.
• The Tigers defense is causing havoc early in 2015-16. Memphis opponents are averaging 22.0 turnovers per game (66 miscues in three games). Of those 66 turnovers, 43 were swipes by the Tigers. Memphis is averaging 14.3 steals per game. Ariel Hearn leads Memphis with 11 steals and had a career-high five swipes vs. Jacksonville State Nov. 13. In the Nov. 19 Kansas contest, Brianna Wright recorded a career-high six steals.
• It's only three games into 2015-16, but any positive trend is, well, positive. One of those early-season positive trends for the Tigers is the team's free throw shooting. Memphis is shooting 80.6 percent from the charity stripe (50-of-62). The Tigers shot over 80 percent from the free throw line in two of their three games. Six Tigers are shooting 75 percent or better from the charity stripe.
• Senior Ariel Hearn joined an elite group in Tigers women's basketball history. On Nov. 19 vs. Kansas, Hearn handed out four assists to increase her career total to 328. With those four assists, she moved into the top-10 on the Tigers all-time assists chart. Also, Hearn became one of only three players in program history to have 1,500 points and 325 assists (Kitty Allen, Connie Hibbler).
