Memphis Rolls to 67-49 Season Opening win over Southern Miss
Nov 14, 2015 | Men's Basketball
Senior Shaq Goodwin led the Tigers with 15 points
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis came out firing on all cylinders and didn't let up as they cruised to a 67-49 win over Southern Mississippi in the season opener Saturday night at FedExForum. The new-look Tigers were led in scoring by a familiar face in Shaq Goodwin with 15 points, while nine different players scored in the game.
"I thought we did some good stuff tonight defensively, holding them to 26-percent from the field and 29-percent from the three-point line," Memphis head coach Josh Pastner said. "I love that we had 17 assists on 23 made field goals. I love the fact that we only had seven turnovers and hit 18-of-25 from the free-throw line. Shaq has been great all summer to this point. He was bouncy and quick. He played at a very high level. He had fifteen points and about eight or nine rebounds."
Goodwin was 6-of-11 shooting to score his 15 points and he pulled down a team high nine rebounds. The senior has scored 971 career points and now needs 29 more to become the 50th Tiger player to reach the 1,000-point club.
Freshman Dedric Lawson started the scoring with two free throws and had eight points within the first five minutes of the game as Memphis jumped out to an early double-digit lead, 12-2.
Lawson finished with 13 points and four rebounds. He was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Trahson Burrell also scored in double figures with 11 points while also pulling down five rebounds.
After Memphis grew its lead to double digits in the opening minutes, they expanded it out to as much as 20 in the first half. Southern Miss never closed the Tiger lead to less than 14 points in the second half and the largest Memphis lead of the night was 29 points.
"In the start of the game, the energy was going really well," Goodwin said. "We came out with our foot on the gas and led the whole first half. It was a good first half and pretty much a turnaround from the exhibition game. Definitely proud of that start."
Junior Avery Woodson added nine points for the Tigers and was 2-of-2 on three-pointers. Freshman K.J. Lawson chipped in seven points and five rebounds. Senior guard Ricky Tarrant scored four points in his Tiger debut and dished out four assists.
Freshmen Dedric and KJ Lawson, Nick Marshall and Jeremiah Martin each scored in their collegiate debuts.
Memphis had just seven turnovers in the game while Southern Miss coughed it up 19 times.
Southern Mississippi was led in scoring by Eddie Davis III with 13 points, while Michael Ramey added 10 points for the Golden Eagles.
Following the season-opening win, Memphis will welcome the nationally-ranked Oklahoma Sooners on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. as part of ESPN's College Hoops Tip-Off Marathon.
