Tigers Fall in Five to Ole Miss
Sep 05, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis volleyball dropped its second-straight five-set affair, falling to Ole Miss, 25-18, 22-25, 25-20, 18-25, 16-14, on Friday night in front of an energized crowd of 987 fans at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The Tigers fall to 1-3 on the season while Ole Miss remains a perfect 5-0 despite a double-digit kill effort from Kate Gibson, Catlin Lilly, Alexis Wesley and Lauren Wright.
For the fourth consecutive match, the Blue and Gray were unable to post a first-set victory. The Rebels were aided by four blocks in the opening frame and a .025 hitting percentage by the Tigers. Junior setter Veronica Zimmerman tallied 10 assists and four digs in the open while the Rebels' Melanie Crow notched five kills. With the double-digit assist total in the first game, Zimmerman moved into eighth place in the Tigers' all-time record book for assists and needs only five to eclipse 2,000 for her career.
The Tigers were able to out-block the Rebels in the second set (3-2) and saw a .257 swing percentage, aided by Wright and freshman Oluchi Agomuo, who hit .800 and .500, respectively. Zimmerman added another 13 helpers in the period as Memphis claimed the three-point victory.
Each team exchanged victories over games three and four to force a decisive fifth-game. Both teams appeared equally matched as neither side was able to obtain more than a two-point advantage, but a 4-2 run by the Rebels over the final six points proved to do-in the Tigers as Ole Miss took the match, 3-2.
Defensively, Aleksandra Petronijevic tallied 28 digs and Wesley notched a pair of solo blocks in the effort. Zimmerman also posted 10 digs giving the Toledo, Ohio, native her fourth-consecutive double-double.
The Tigers will be in action again tomorrow at noon when they take on UT Martin in their second game at the Memphis Invitational. To learn more about the team, visit GoTigersGo.com and follow @MemphisVolley on Twitter and Instagram.
