No. 9 Tigers Rifle Defeats Columbus State
Dec 04, 2014 | Rifle
COLUMBUS, Ga. – University of Memphis freshman Haylea Broughton recorded season bests for aggregate score and air rifle to lead the No. 9 nationally-ranked Tigers rifle squad to a win over Columbus State 4602-4537. The match was held Nov. 22, but as a result of mechanical scoring difficulties at Columbus State’s range, the scores were recently finalized.
The squad split the disciplines, with Memphis winning smallbore 2338-2240 and the Cougars taking air rifle 2297-2264.
Broughton shot the match’s highest aggregate score of 1172 (560-592) and also posted the event’s top air rifle score of 592. The aggregate score and air rifle result both were season bests for Broughton. The freshman’s 592 air rifle score was one shy of tying the team’s best result shot by Beth Lee (593) against Army Oct. 13.
Senior Max Burkhardt placed second at the match with an aggregate score of 1151 (566-585). She also placed second in air rifle with a 585.
Junior Beth Lee was fourth in air rifle with a 582. Lee and Makennon Doran tied for fourth with an aggregate score of 1147.
The Tigers are off from competition until mid-January 2015. Memphis hosts No. 15 N.C. State Jan. 17 and No. 4 Kentucky Jan. 18.
