Tigers Have Success at Dick Vitale Invitational

SARASOTA, Fla. - The University of Memphis women's tennis team wrapped up a successful day at the Dick Vitale Invitational on Friday afternoon in Sarasota. The Tigers went unbeaten in the first round in singles and doubles and sophomore Marta Morga advanced into the quarterfinals.

Sophomore Marta Morga survived an early scare in the Round of 32 with Florida Gulf Coast's Julianna Curtis, but Morga claimed the first set after a tiebreaker before cruising to the victory in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Morga, the ITA's 101st-ranked player, powered through Caroline Joyce of Princeton, 6-3, 6-2, to advance into the quarterfinals for a matchup with Florida's Spence O'Liang on Saturday.
Sophomore Anki Wind faced no issues in her first match with Boston College's Lexi Borr, rolling to a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the Round of 32. The Dinslaken, Germany, native suffered a tough setback in the Round of 16 to Stefani Stojic of Florida, 6-4, 7-5.
Senior Liza Tymchenko kept the Tigers rolling in singles in the Round of 32. The Kharkov, Ukraine, native claimed a victory in a first-set tiebreaker before cruising to the 7-6 (5), 6-2, victory over Mariella Calderon of North Florida. The senior was unable to claim a tight match against Maria Alvarez of Oklahoma State, falling in three sets, 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-3.
The Blue and Gray also picked up a victory in pairs play behind the racquets of Wind and Tymchenko. The Tigers' duo took down North Florida's pair of Luise Intert and Rebecca Pereira, 8-3. In the quarterfinals, the Tigers' pair was unable to keep the momentum rolling as they fell to Florida's duo of Stojic and Liang, 8-3.
