IRVING, Texas - Senior lefthander Brennon Martin became the second-straight Memphis hurler to earn C-USA Pitcher of the Week honors after he threw a complete game to defeat nationally-ranked Rice in Friday night's conference opener, the league office announced today.
Martin's award comes a week after Ryan Fraser's complete-game effort against Tennessee Tech earned him the league's weekly honor and represents the first time since the 1999 season that Tiger pitchers have garnered Pitch of the Week accolades in consecutive weeks. Craig House earned the honor on Mar. 1, 1999 and Josh Stewart followed on Mar. 8, 1999.
Martin allowed one run, struck out five and walked just one in a 5-2 complete-game victory over then-No. 22 Rice in the series-opener last Friday night. The win marked the second-straight time Martin has defeated nationally-ranked Rice. The outing was the second complete-game performance for Memphis this season and the third of Martin's career. Martin held Rice to just two runs in the nine innings--an earned run in the fourth and an unearned score in the ninth. The senior tossed 128 pitches to help the Tigers snap a six-game home losing streak to the Owls.
Martin and the Tigers will take on Arkansas State in midweek competition. First pitch at ASU's Tomlinson Stadium is set for 6:30 p.m.
