Lady Tigers Upend Austin Peay, 4-0

The Memphis Lady Tigers picked up a 4-0 victory over the Austin Peay Lady Governors on Sat., Feb. 13 at The University Club of Memphis. The Lady Tigers improve to 5-6 on the season with the victory. The U of M finished the day with a 2-0 record after picking up a win in the morning against Samford, 4-2, after losing the doubles point to begin the match.
"Today was a great day for our team and I think it was an important step in the right direction for the women's tennis program at the University of Memphis." said Memphis assistant coach Mark Finnegan. "Andrea (Arques-Garcia) and Amanda (Brown) really stepped up at the No. 2 doubles spot today. Once again the seniors really showed their leadership by winning their three singles matches. Marjorie (Ondeck) hung through a lot of adversity in her match and was able to stay close in the third set. Amanda (Brown) clinched the match for us."
The Lady Tigers won two-of-three doubles matches to clinch the doubles point to take the early lead in the match of Austin Peay, 1-0. At No. 1 doubles, Ashley Murdock and Marjorie Ondeck upended Vanja Tomic and Mariana Pagan, 8-5. With the win, Murdock and Ondeck improve to 4-4 in doubles this season.
At the No. 2 spot, Amanda Brown and Andrea Arques-Garcia got their first win of the season with a victory over Michelle Liew and Carolin Weikard, 8-1.
Kelly Gray and Courtney Collins did not finish thier match at No. 3 doubles due to the doubles point already having been decided.
At No. 1 singles, Murdock, playing her third singles match of the day after picking up a win over Samford and playing the world's 105th-ranked player at the 2010 Cellular South Cup, defeated Tomic, 6-1, 7-5. The win was Murdock's fifth-straight singles win during the 2010 spring dual season. The back-to-back All-C-USA honoree currently has a record of 7-4.
At the No. 2 spot, Collins, a freshman from Fulton, Miss., picked up her second singles win of the day with a 7-5, 6-3, victory over Weikard of APSU. Collins is now 6-5 in singles this season.
Brown, a senior from Whitby, Ontario, clinched the match for the Lady Tigers with a crucial third set victory over Liew, taking the tiebreaker, 7-0, after the third set was tied 6-6. Brown lost the first set to Liew, 6-4, but bounced back to take the second and third sets. The win was Brown's second of the day after picking up a win at No. 4 singles over her opponent from Samford. Brown is currently 4-4 in singles this season.
Marjorie Ondeck, Andrea Arques-Garcia and Kelly Gray didn't finish their singles matches due to the match already being decided.
The Lady Tigers will return to the court on Feb. 20 when they face USF in Tampa, Fla. The Tigers will continue their Florida road trip with a match against UCF on Feb. 21 in Orlando.
