Murfreesboro, Tenn. - The Memphis women's tennis team captured a 4-3 win over the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders on Saturday at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The win is the first for the Lady Tigers over the Blue Raiders since March 12, 1999, when the U of M upended MTSU, 6-3, in Murfreesboro. With the win Memphis moves to 10-11 on the season. MTSU is 8-12 on the year.
"This was a great win for our program today," said head coach Lee Taylor Walker. "Our doubles is extremely sharp and energetic right now and the chemistry is good with all three teams. They are closing matches out great in doubles as of late."
With the victory on Saturday, the Lady Tigers also bettered their season record from last season. The 2008 U of M women's tennis team finished the year with a mark of 9-13. This is the second season for the program under Walker as the head coach. The former Memphis men's netter has led the Lady Tigers to 19 wins in just two seasons.
To begin the day, Memphis was able to sweep the doubles matches in order to capture the doubles point for the third straight match. At No. 1 doubles, Marjorie Ondeck and Ashley Murdock upended Marietta Bigus and Andrea Herrera, 8-2. Murdock and Ondeck have nine doubles wins this season.
At No. 2 doubles, Amanda Brown and Lindsey Wiseman defeated Marlene Chemin and Taylor Coffey, 8-3. Brown and Wiseman are 6-3 in doubles this season. The pair has captured three-straight victories, winning matches against Middle Tennessee, Arkansas State and Southern Miss.
At the No. 3 spot, Kristin Chamberlain and Sarah Irvin defeated Alex Dachos and Anna Djananova, 8-7.
In singles, the U of M was able to capture three quick wins to solidify a win over Middle Tennessee. At No. 1 singles, Murdock picked up her 15th win of the year matching her win total from her All-C-USA caliber season in 2008.
At the No. 2 spot, Ondeck defeated Bigus, 6-3, 6-3. Ondeck has produced a mark of 12-13.
At No. 6 singles, Wiseman, a sophomore from Memphis, Tenn., won her sixth singles match of the season with a win over MTSU's Dachos, 6-2, 6-2.
"Singles was the most disciplined I have seen the team play all year," Walker Said. "Each player is really stating to understand their game style and play it appropriately. Even the girls who lost today looked very good at times and were a point or two away from having victories. I'm proud of how are team is looking as we head into the conference championship this week."
The Lady Tigers will finish up the regular season on Tues., April 14 with a match against Tulane before they begin play at the 2009 C-USA Tournament in Houston, Texas.
