MEMPHIS - The University of Memphis softball program will host a three-team exhibition tournament on Saturday at the Tiger Softball Complex beginning at 10 a.m., which will also feature Union University (Tenn.) and Northwest Mississippi Community College. Admission is free to the tournament.
The tournament will be the last fall match-up for the Tigers against a college opponent. The U of M will host a Blue and Grey scrimmage at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 31, in its final competitive outing of 2009.
Last week, Memphis had its tournament against Western Kentucky and Mississippi Valley State cancelled due to weather. The previous week, the Tigers swept a doubleheader against Alcorn State, winning 3-0 and 6-0.
Senior Vanessa Walle and Carly Hummel combined for a no-hitter in the first game as the Tiger pitching staff held the Lady Braves scoreless in the 14 innings of play. Hummel led the team on the mound with 16 strikeouts in six innings of no-hit work, striking out all but two of the possible outs.
Despite starting out slow, the Memphis bats also picked up the slack in game two scoring six runs, including a five-run second inning. Junior third baseman Maddie McKinley led the team with four hits in the two games, including a three-run homer in game two.
Memphis will open the tournament at 10 a.m. against Northwest Mississippi and will follow with a match-up against Union at noon. Northwest Mississippi and Union will face off at 2 p.m. to close the tournament.
Union University in Jackson, Tenn., is a NAIA program in the TranSouth Conference. The Lady Bulldogs finished third in the TranSouth with a 9-5 record and went 26-23 overall.
Northwest Mississippi Community College finished 27-11 in 2009 and 21-3 in the MACJC. The Lady Rangers won the MACJC north division championship, took third place in the MACJC State Tournament and finished fifth at the Region XXIII Tournament.
Both Memphis games can be followed on CBS College Sports GameTracker. The live stats can be found at GoTigersGo.com.
