MARTIN, Tenn. - Increasing its winning streak to a season best five games, the University of Memphis won both games of a doubleheader at UT Martin on Wednesday at Bettye Giles Field. The Tigers (21-19) never trailed in the day as the team earned 6-4 and 5-2 victories.
Junior Leila Dolfo led the team with four hits, two RBI and three runs scored in the two games. Redshirt freshman Heather Mott had three hits and knocked in three runs in the first game. Junior Kimmi Hayden also had three hits on the day with two RBI.
Freshmen Kimber Bossom and Janelle Valle both earned victories, while freshman Rayna McClinton picked up her first career save. Bossom pitched all seven innings in game one to improve to 9-8 on the season allowing two earned runs and striking out three.
Valle allowed two runs on four hits in three innings of work in game two as she improves to 8-6 on the year. It is her first start since March 29 against Houston. McClinton held the Skyhawks hitless in the final four innings for the save.
Memphis is now 4-2 all-time against UT Martin and has won four-straight after dropping the first two games in the all-time series in Martin.
Junior Leandra Hines scored the first run in the first inning of the second game to give Memphis a 1-0 lead. After singling with one out and advancing on her 15th steal, Hines scored on a single up the middle by Hayden.
Dolfo knocked in a second inning run to give Memphis a 2-0 lead with a single to left field to score junior Tori Gross from second. The Skyhawks tied the game in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run homer to left by Blayn Bollman.
Dolfo broke up the tie in the top of the fourth with a solo home run. The dinger that proved to be the game-winner is her ninth of the year. Memphis added two more insurance runs in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by Gross, her third of the season.
In game one, the Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a infield single by Hines to score Gross who had begun the inning with a double. Memphis added two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead on a two-run homer to left by Mott. One inning later, Mott knocked in her third run of the game with a single to left to score Dolfo.
The Skyhawks shortened the Memphis lead to one with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and then tied it with a run in the sixth. But the Tigers scored two runs in the top of the seventh for the victory. Hayden drove in the winning run and freshman Kailey Kassner also had an RBI in the inning.
Memphis will next host a three-game conference series with Southern Miss on Saturday and Sunday at the Tiger Softball Complex. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday and conclude with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
