Sophomore Tyler Huelsing went 2-for-4 with his first career home run and four RBI and Memphis jumped out to a quick six-run lead en route to a 10-5 win over UAB in the Conference USA opener for both teams on Friday night.
The Tigers, who came into the game with one of the league's lowest home run totals, used three longballs to take control of the game 10-1 after five innings of play. Hulesing's homer, a three-run blast to right, highlighted a big six-run second inning by the Tigers. Freshman designated hitter Robby Graham ignited the second-inning scoring barrage by following a Trey Wiedman walk with his second homer of the year--a towering shot just inside the leftfield foul pole that opened the scoring at 2-0. Consecutive singles by Eric Farrell and Chris Kirkland trailed a double by Chad Zurcher to give Memphis a 3-0 advantage.
UAB crossed a run in the third, but Memphis answered with a four-spot in the fourth. All four runs were scored with two outs. After Zurcher reached on an infield error, He was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Farrell. K.K. Chalmers double to deep centerfield brought Zurcher home. The senior then scored on a single by Huelsing. Brett Bowen capped the fourth with a lined shot over the left field wall for a 10-1 lead.
UAB plated another run in the seventh and staged a ninth-inning rally for the 10-5 final. The Blazers got an RBI-double by Ryan Keedy and a two-run bomb to leftcenter off the bat of Cody McMurry. Keedy led UAB's 10-hit offensive attack with a 3-for-4 night.
Memphis starter Scott McGregor was masterful in seven innings. He scattered seven hits and struck out seven to earn his first win of the year. Reliever Garrett Hachtel worked the eighth and ninth, giving up three runs on three hits. He fanned one and walked four.
Mitch Kloskowski falls to 2-2 after being battered for 10 runs on nine hits in a five-inning start.
The Tigers and Blazers with square off for game two of the series on Saturday with the first pitch slated for 2:05 p.m.
