ROCK HILL, S.C. - A fourth inning grand slam spoiled a six extra base hit effort by the University of Memphis softball team on Friday night as the Tigers fell 8-5 to Providence in the Winthrop/adidas Invitational at the Winthrop Softball Complex.
The Tigers (14-11) split the opening day of the tournament after beating Gardner-Webb, 2-1, earlier in the day in a comeback effort with the U of M scoring the winning run on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Both juniors Leila Dolfo and Tori Gross had two doubles in the game, and senior Lindsay Kelso hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for her fourth dinger of the season. Redshirt-freshman Heather Mott also had a double in the seventh inning.
The Tigers left eight runners on base in the game and left 18 on the day. Memphis also hit into two double plays in the game.
The U of M took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the third inning when the Friars scored three runs to take a one point advantage. Jenna Garcia hit a two run home run in the inning. Mary Rose Sheehy then made it an 8-3 lead with her two-out grand slam in the fourth inning after Memphis walked three batters.
The Friars scored the first run of the game in the top of the first. Garcia doubled and scored on a fielding error on a ground ball hit by Sheehy. Memphis tied the game in the bottom of the second on Gross' first double of the game to score freshman Kailey Kassner who had reached on a single.
The Tigers scored two runs in the third inning with Mott being hit by the pitch with the bases loaded and Kassner following with a walk. A line drive double play to third base ended the inning for Memphis.
The U of M would add a run in the fifth and sixth inning on Kelso's homer and a RBI double by Dolfo to score Gross.
Memphis will continue the three-day tournament on Saturday facing Vermont at 1 p.m. (EST) on Field B at the Winthrop Softball Complex and Furman at 5 p.m. on Terry Field. Both games can be followed live through GameTracker.
