A balanced attack on both the offensive and defensive sides of the net kept UAB on the run all night in a 3-0 win in the Conference USA opener for both squads. A double-double of 12 kills and 13 digs from Ashley Liford, combined with 10 kills each from Shelby Burton and Sarah Bury guided the Tigers to a sweep of the defending C-USA champs.
Led by five blocks from Burton and Bury, the Memphis defense lmited UAB to a .016 clip for the match. The Blazers hit -.130 in the opening set, .086 in game two and .122 in the finale. Liford 13 digs were a team high. Christine Bach, Bury and Laura Côté added nine digs forthe UofM defense.
Côté set a match-high 36 assists for the Tigers, who hit .266 for the match.
UAB, who was playing without the service of i starting setter Nevena Stefanov, was paced by preseason all-conference selection Ivana Bozic's 10 kills. Lilly Domingos handed out 25 assists. Defensively, Aleksandra Vujovic made a match-high 15 digs.
Memphis will hit the floor for its next contest against Stetson on Friday. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
