Women in Third After Day One of Championships

HOUSTON -Rain has delayed the finish of the first day of competition at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Rice Track Stadium.
Currently the Lady Tigers sit in third place with eight points, while no events have completed in the men's competition.
Thrower Steffen Nerdal sits in second-place in the men's hammer throw heading into the final rounds, but the event has been delayed and will not be finished until Friday at 12:30 p.m.
Senior Gail Lee was just one foot away from capturing the fourth C-USA crown of her career. The two-time All-American posted a 185-07 in the hammer throw to claim second-place. The mark was a new collegiate best for Lee in the hammer, breaking her previous school record of 184-2.
"Gail performed really well today," Memphis track coach Kevin Robinson said. "She did the best she could do, and it was close."
The meet opened with the first part of competition in the decathlon and heptathlon. After the first day both the Memphis' multi-event competitors sit in scoring position.
On the men's side, decathlete Jason Morgan sits in sixth place after five events, bolstered by his fourth-place finish in the 400 meters. Morgan also finished fifth in the shot put with a distance of 36-07.75.
In the women's heptathlon, junior Eryka Morris stands in fifth-place heading into Friday's final four events. The San Antonio native turned in the her best performances of the day in the shot put (35-3.75) and 200 meters (25.92), picking up a pair of fifth-place finishes.
"We're in good scoring position heading in to tomorrow," Robinson said. "Both Eryka and Jason have are at their best on their second day. I think they'll move up and garner some points for the team."
Day two of the championships will feature the conclusion of the multi-events as well as the start of running events.
