Narasimhan Named Newcomer of the Year

DALLAS, Texas - Junior men's tennis player Amrit Narasimhan (Richmond, Texas) was named to the All-Conference USA Second Team and was voted the C-USA Newcomer of the Year in a vote of league head coaches it was announced by the league office, Tuesday.
"It's a huge honor for Amrit to be named to the All-Conference Team and to get the Newcomer award in such a competitive tennis league," Head Coach Paul Goebel said. "Amrit worked hard following the fall season, he deserves both of these awards."
Narasimhan, a graduate of William P. Clements High School in Texas, was the Tigers' No. 1 singles player and a member of the Tigers' No. 1 doubles duo and was earlier this spring voted to the C-USA All-Academic Team. Narasimhan was 7-4 at No. 1 singles, 3-1 at No. 2 and 2-0 at No. 3 singles on the season, finishing with a 12-5 mark in dual season play. He played against nine players from the last ITA singles rankings, and owned wins over three ranked opponents, two of them coming on the road.
Narasimhan also teamed with Benedikt Fischer for a 6-10 record at No. 1 doubles, facing six nationally-ranked doubles teams, including two top 20 teams. He was named the C-USA Player of the Week for Mar. 27th, after a 4-0 week which included wins at No. 1 singles and doubles against league foe UAB. In all, Narasimhan was 3-0 in singles against league competition, and 3-1 in doubles against C-USA foes.
A member of the Dean's List, the Tiger 3.0 Club and the Tiger Top 30, Narasimhan also received the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal earlier this spring after sporting a 3.84 GPA in sport administration in his first semester at Memphis.
Narasimhan is the 13th Memphis Tiger to receive All-Conference USA honors, and is the sixth to earn second team honors. He also extends the Tigers' streak of having a player earn an all-conference team slot to seven straight seasons, dating back to Michael Chamberlain and Joe Schmulian earning third team honors in 2001 after Richard Magney earned third team honors in 1999.
He becomes the first-ever Tiger to receive an individual post-season honor from the league though with his Newcomer of the Year award.
