Five Memphis errors combined with five Marshall home runs equaled a rough day for the Tigers as the Thundering Herd snapped a 16-game losing streak with a 21-7 win in game two of the three-game C-USA series at Nat Buring Stadium. The loss ended Memphis' six-game win streak.
It was all Marshall from the first inning of play. The Herd, who posted their first league win of the year, used a pair of critical fielding errors by the Memphis infield to jump out to a 5-0 lead after just a half-inning of action.
Memphis answered with RBI-singles from Bill Moss and Adam Amar to cut the deficit to 5-2, but that would be as close as the Tigers would come as Marshall plated four runs in the second to surge ahead 9-2.
The Thundering Herd, who sent at least seven batters to the plate in each of the first three innings, put the contest out of reach with four more tallies in the third. A pair of two-run jobs by Brandon Casimassima and Tommy Johnson made it 13-2.
Memphis held Marshall scoreless in the fourth, but made two more errors that ended up costing them four unearned scores as Marshall built its lead up to 17-2 and threatened to end the game early on the league's Saturday Mercy Rule.
The Tigers denied Marshall the shortened tilt with three runs in the seventh on a sac fly from Joey Lieberman and a two-run single off the bat of Josh Irvin that made it 17-5.
Moss' 10th home run of the year--a towering, two-run blast to left--made it 17-7. But Marshall answered with back-to-back jacks in the eight and another homer in the ninth for the 21-7 final.
Memphis starter Scott McGregor was roughed up for nine runs in 1.1 innings. Defensive miscues behind him gave way to six unearned runs.
Ryan Kiel was the winner after tossing six innings and allowing five runs on seven hits.
Amar led Memphis with three hits and an RBI. He is now three hits and five RBI shy of the program's all-time record in both offensive categories.
The two teams with play the series rubber match tomorrow with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
