In what seemed more like a continuation of game two; Marshall scored eight runs in the first two innings of play and cruised to an 11-0 win over Memphis to take the Conference USA series two games to one. Herd starter Jeremy Slone went the distance, striking out five and limiting Memphis to just four hits to lead Marshall to its second C-USA series victory since joining the league last year.
It looked like a carbon-copy of Saturday's contest as the Thundering Herd jumped on the Tigers with five quick first-inning tallies. Memphis starter Garrett Hachtel struggled from the first batter. The freshman from Cordova walked each of the first three batters before giving up a grand slam to cleanup hitter Nick Casamassima. Marshall, who sent nine hitters to the plate in the opening frame, used a Tiger error to tack on a fifth run.
The second inning saw the Herd extend the lead to 8-0 and again send nine batters to the dish. Marshall got consecutive singles from Brit Vincent, Jeff Rowley, Brendan Murphy and Casamassima. Casamassima's two-run single through the right side scored a pair and Tommy Johnson added a sac fly.
The Herd got a two-run blast to center by Johnson to put the game away 11-0 in the top half of the seventh.
Will Hudgens came on in the first in relief of Hachtel after four batters and pitched 6.1 innings. The two-sport athlete surrendered seven runs on 13 hits and fanned three. Hudgens held Marshall to just one hit from the third to fifth innings.
Memphis will now hit the road for a midweek battle against Ohio Valley frontrunner, Southeast Missouri State, beginning Tues., Apr. 24. First pitch for the series opener is slated for 6 p.m. Listen live as "The Voice of Tiger Baseball" Jeff Brightwell calls the play-by-play action.
