MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Playing without freshman Marjorie Ondeck (injury) and senior Christina Wieser (illness), the Lady Tigers relied on two sophomores and three freshmen and despite battling, came up short, 6-1, against McNeese State, Tuesday, at WellWorx.
"They fought hard and we just have to keep battling," Head Coach Charlotte Peterson said. "We started off really well by winning the doubles point."
Memphis was only able to field two doubles teams with two of the seven Lady Tigers out for the match, but the short-staffed roster did not hurt Memphis in doubles, as Ekin Zafir and Dara Toulch won their No. 1 doubles match, 8-3, while the freshman tandem of Amanda Brown and Katie-Mary Outhwaite won their No. 2 match, 8-1, to go up 1-0 early.
McNeese State came back with wins at No. 1, 4 and 5 singles and received a point for the Lady Tiger default at No. 6 to close out the win, but Memphis kept fighting, as Toulch took her opponent, Victoria Martinez, to 7-5 before falling. Fellow freshman Amanda Brown came back from a 6-4 first set loss with a 6-4 win in the second, but was edged in the tiebreak, 11-9.
Memphis is slated to host Northwestern State, Friday, beginning at 2 p.m. Rain is tentatively in the forecast and due to a junior tennis tournament in Memphis, there are no indoor facilities available for the match to be moved indoors.
