STARKVILLE, Miss. - For the second time in three meets in the outdoor season, J.D. Erickson surpassed NCAA Regional qualifying marks in each of his three events, as he led the U of M at the Bulldog Invitational, at Mississippi State University.
Susan King headlined the action for Lady Tigers, qualifying for Regionals in the shot put, while Gail Lee and Whitney Bolton each picked up an event crown in record-setting fashion.
Erickson won the shot put with a personal-best equaling mark of 58-03.25" (17.76m) to improve upon his regional mark in the event. The senior added a victory in the hammer with a mark of 186-03.00" (56.77m), while finishing second in the discus with a toss of 174-07.00" (53.22m). Each of the latter two marks surpassed the Regional standards, but was just off Erickson's top effort from earlier in the season.
King won the shot put with an outdoor-best and regional qualifying mark of 48-05.50" (14.77m) to qualify for Regionals in a second event after qualifying in the discus at the Rhodes Open. In addition, the junior finished third in the discus with a throw of 149-09.00" (45.65m) and fourth in the hammer with a personal-best mark of 171-03.00" (52.21m).
Bolton won the pole vault with a mark of 11-05.75" (3.50m), breaking her own school record, and improving her previous best mark in the event by nearly a foot.
Lee added another win and a school record, taking the hammer with a mark of 175-00.00" (53.33m), while breaking her own school record in the event.
Tyler Frazier and Emily Malinowski registered the final two event titles for the U of M, with Frazier winning the javelin with a season-best effort of 187-05.00" (57.12m) and Malinowski claiming the 3000m with a time of 10:08.30.
Sivan Aballi put up two solid showings on the day, finishing fourth in both the shot put and discus with tosses of 47-06.50" (14.49m) and 148-06.00" (45.27m), respectively. The effort in the shot put was a Regional mark, but did not better the sophomore's previous high for the event.
In other top-seven showings for the men, Greg Norrid finished second in the javelin with a throw of 150-04.00" (45.83m). Brian Prackett finished third in the pole vault with a clearance of 13-06.00" (4.11m). Brandon Winbush finished third in the long jump with a leap of 22-05.00" (6.09m). Willie Green placed third in the 100m with a season-best time of 10.71. Larry Harris finished fourth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.69. Norbert Gulyas placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 156-06.00" (47.70m), while Amaechi Oselukwue finished seventh in both the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles with times of 15.20 and 55.28, respectively.
On the women's side, Chen Edri finished third in the javelin with a throw of 123-03.00" (37.56m). Nikole Jackson finished fifth in the hammer with a personal-best mark of 156-05.00" (47.67m). Annette Uzoh finished sixth in the hammer with a personal-best effort of 154-01.00" (46.97m). Cassandra Harding finished sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 36-09.00 (11.20m). LaShunda Flake finished seventh in the 200m with a personal-best time of 24.83, and Josetta Brooks finished seventh in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.92.
The U of M track and field teams will be back in action next Saturday, April 8, as they travel down the road to Oxford, Miss., for the Ole Miss Open.
