For just the second time in school history, the University of Memphis volleyball team has secured a first-round bye in the Conference USA Volleyball Championship that begins Nov. 16. The Tigers, 25-7 overall and 11-5 in C-USA play, will enter the 12-team field as the No. 3 seed--their highest seeding ever for the C-USA tournament. Head coach Carrie Yerty's crew will take the hardwood on Fri., Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. They will face the winner of the No. 6 ECU/No. 11 UTEP first-round match.
Memphis' previous best finish was in 2003 when it earned a No. 4 seed in the postseason field. The Tigers advanced to the title match before being knocked off by Louisville, 3-0.
Tulsa went 2-0 over the weekend to claim the 2006 regular season crown with a 13-3 mark in league play. Memphis handed the Golden Hurricane one of its three league losses in a five-game decision on Oct. 13. The regular season crown is the first for Tulsa, who will enter the tournament with a 26-6 record. Tulsa will play the winner of the No. 8 SMU/No. 9 Southern Miss contest at Noon on Friday.
Other teams to earn first round bye are No. 2 Marshall and No. 4 Tulane. The Thundering Herd, who swept Memphis in a pair of regular season matches, will await the winner of No. 7 Houston/No. 10 Rice. No. 5 UAB and No. 12 UCF will face off at 2 p.m. on Thursday to decide who will advance to play Tulane at 2 p.m. on Friday.
Sunday's championship match begins at 5 p.m. and will be aired LIVE on CSTV.
