Cross Country Set for Memphis Twilight

For a second consecutive week the University of Memphis cross country team will compete close to home. The squad will run Saturday at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic hosted by Christian Brothers University at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex.
Last week the men's team had their best meet of the season with Geoff Standen and Juan Arboleda both setting new personal best times in the 8k run and leading the Tigers to a sixth place finish.
Lady Tiger Emily Malinowski is looking for her third consecutive top-five finish. The New York native finished second two weeks ago at the UALR Open and fourth last weekend at the Rhodes Invitational.
Despite their individual success the Memphis coaching staff is looking for the team to continue to improve as it nears the Conference USA meet in Greenville, N.C. on Oct. 28.
"I think we had another pretty decent week of training," said Memphis cross country coach Mike Power. "We have three weeks until we go to the conference meet, so we still have a lot of work to do."
Saturday's meet will be slightly different from most cross country events, which typically start in the morning. The women's 5k is not scheduled to start until 8:10 p.m. with the men's 8k kicking off at 8:50.
Despite the difference in time, Power doesn't think that racing later will have that big of an impact on his team.
"It really shouldn't be that big of a deal for us physically," Power said. "It can be a little challenging mentally because you have to wait around all day. Usually we're finished by lunch time. I do think they'll be excited to not have me waking them up so early."
