MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Junior setter Heather Watts (Sandy, Utah/Skyline) was named the Conference USA Volleyball Player of the Week it was announced by the league office, Monday.
Watts led the Tigers to a 4-0 record last week and Memphis currently stands atop the Conference USA standings with a 10-1 record. Watts earned her second straight tournament MVP title at last weekend's Memphis Invitational as the Tigers earned their first home tournament crown since 1998.
A junior who is slated to graduate in December of 2003 with her undergraduate degree before starting graduate school in January, Watts already has surpassed the 2,000 career assist mark and the 100 career service ace mark, both passed in a 3-2 win at UT-Martin, Tuesday. For the week, Watts finished with 175 assists, eight total blocks, 41 digs and a .394 hitting percentage. This is Watts' second career player of the week honor, and her first solo honor. She shared the award last year with Cincinnati's Bonita Wise during the week of Sept. 23rd.
Memphis takes its seven-match win streak on the road this weekend, opening the Birmingham Southern tournament against host BSU, Thursday, at 7 p.m. Memphis faces ACC foe North Carolina State, Friday, at 11 a.m. and will wrap up the tournament with a 9 a.m. match against Wofford and a 5 p.m. match against South Alabama.
The Tigers' 10-1 start ties their best-ever record through the first 11 matches under Head Coach Carrie Yerty. The last time Memphis was 10-1 through the first 11 matches was 2001 after they got off to a school-record best 10-0 start. That squad went on to finish with a 22-10 record before falling in the second round of the Conference USA tournament.
