The University of Memphis men's tennis team (11-8, 2-1 C-USA) dropped a tough 4-2 match in non-conference play against the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, Wednesday. The two teams had intended to play outdoors, but instead were forced inside to complete the match, playing only the singles matches and skipping doubles play.
Senior Joe Schmulian extended his winning streak to seven straight matches with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Juan Carlos Baca at No. 3 singles, while sophomore Alex Bucewicz also continued his impressive spring season, picking up his team-leading 16th singles win with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win over Mithun Murali at No. 4. But those would be the Tigers lone points as the rest of the match featured close singles matches.
UALR's Alexei Poiutchviets won the No. 1 singles match over Lee Taylor Walker, 6-4, 6-4, while Sebastian Falk dug up a drop shot on match point to win the No. 2 set 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 over Ben Stapp. Memphis freshman Brendan Malarkey suffered a set-back at No. 5, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 to Dave Baxendine, while Alex Jago watch as a forehand just missed the line, giving his No. 6 opponent at 7-6, 7-5 victory.
Memphis has two matches remaining on its regular season schedule, starting Friday at UT-Martin. Memphis then will have its final home match of the 2003 spring season, Saturday, against Western Kentucky. That Saturday match will be the final home matches for seniors Ben Stapp and Joe Schmulian before the Tigers head to Milwaukee, Wis., for the Conference USA Championship Tournament.
