MARTIN, Tenn. - The University of Memphis men's tennis team (12-8, 2-1 C-USA) swept UT-Martin, 7-0, in their final road match of the regular season, Friday.
The Skyhawks, who entered the Friday match having lost 11 straight, proved that a roster with no seniors and just one junior could be competitive against the nationally-ranked Tigers, pushing the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches into super tiebreaks and pushing the No. 6 match into a second set tiebreak.
Memphis swept all three doubles matches against the pesky Skyhawks with the team of Ben Stapp and Lee Taylor Walker winning at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, while the team of Joe Schmulian and Alex Bucewicz won their No. 2 match 8-6. The No. 3 duo of Alex Jago and Brendan Malarkey completed the sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles.
Memphis then won the No. 3 through 6 singles matches in straight sets, but the Skyhawks' No. 1 and No. 2 singles players each recovered from a first-set loss to force a super tiebreak. Memphis' Stapp prevailed in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-7, 10-5 over Oltion Mollaymeri, while Walker downed Marten Tamla, 6-3, 6-7, 10-6, at No. 2 singles.
The loss drops UT-Martin to 3-12 overall and improves the Tigers' record to 12-8 overall. Memphis finishes its regular season, Saturday, on the varsity courts on campus against Western Kentucky. That will be the final home match for seniors Joe Schmulian and Ben Stapp.
The Tigers will travel to Milwaukee next weekend to compete in the Conference USA Championships, hosted by Marquette University. The Tigers will await word of their seed for the tournament, Monday.
