JONESBORO, Ark. - The University of Memphis women's tennis team (14-6, 3-1 C-USA) closed its 2002 regular season with a 6-1 road win at Arkansas State, Tuesday. The Lady Tigers finish the spring regular season with the eighth-best winning percentage in Lady Tiger history (.700).
The Lady Tigers won No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches, with the No. 2 team of Marlene Dirnstorfer and Sumitra Rao down 1-2 when they forfeited their No. 2 match. Seniors Sabrina Lindemann and Monica Gonzalez-Gordo downed the ASU team of Liga Geme and Megan McCoy, 8-2, while the team of Viktoria Gruber and Andrea Feichtinger downed the No. 3 doubles team of Barbara Gombosi and Catherine Carui, 8-2.
The Lady Tigers then put the match away by winning five of the six singles matches. Lindemann was the only Lady Tiger to fall in singles, as Geme, the No. 85 ranked singles player in the country, downed Lindemann, 6-3, 6-2. The Lady Tiger line-up underwent some changes as Dirnstorfer and Rao were both out of singles action due to injuries. Freshman Andrea Feichtinger stepped up to No. 4 singles, where she earned her team-leading 16th singles win, while Kristin Noble won her No. 5 match, 6-2, 6-4. Rebecca Garner was slated to play Lica Lucas, but Lucas forfeited the match due to injury.
Memphis now awaits word on its seeding for the Conference USA Championship Tournament that begins Saturday in New Orleans.
