Volleyball Wins Yale Tournament and Gives Yerty 100th Career Win

NEW HAVEN, CT. -- - The University of Memphis volleyball team (9-4, 0-0) extended its season-best winning streak to five matches with a 3-1 win over host Yale in the night cap of the Yale Invitational, Saturday. The win gave Tiger Head Coach Carrie Yerty her 100th career win.
The Tigers won game one, 30-25, after coming back from 7-3 down, but when the Tigers found themselves down 9-0 in the second game, they could not rally and dropped their first game in 11 tries, 30-15. But the Tigers refocused and rallied back to take their first tournament title of the season, 30-14 and 30-24.
Tiara Gilkey (Creve Couer, Mo./Pattonsville) and Brittany Barnett (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands) led the Tigers with 14 kills apiece, while freshman Nancy Nellans (South Bend, Ind./St. Joseph) added 10 kills in the win. Freshman Nan Kimbrell (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) and Heather Watt s (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline) led the defense with 12 digs apiece. Watts also led the offense with 49 assists.
In the first match of the day, the Tigers extended their season-best winning streak to four games with a 3-0 sweep of Marist. The 3-0 win was the third consecutive sweep for Memphis in the tournament, and the fourth consecutive dating back to a 3-0 win over Appalachian State in the final match of the Univerity of Memphis tournament.
The Tigers took the lead and never looked back in the Marist match. Barnett led the Tigers with 15 kills, while Gilkey added nine kills. Kimbrell (Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana) also added nine kills in the win. Freshman Lauren Berg (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral) led the defense with 14 digs.
Memphis will play its final regular season tournament of the year when the Tigers travel to Boston College for a tournament beginning Friday.
Barnett and Watts were each named to their third-straight all-tournament team, with Barnett grabbing tournament MVP honors.
