MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Lady Tiger soccer players Alison Baker and Annika Moller were two of 22 athletes recently selected to the United States Under-23 national amateur squad (formerly U-23 national "B" team) for two upcoming matches against the Women's United Soccer Association's San Diego Spirit and defending league champion San Jose CyberRays, later this month.
The team, comprised mostly of collegiate all-stars, was chosen by U.S. Olympic Development Program officials after the conclusion of the ODP national finals in Tampa, Fla. during Thanksgiving weekend. As part of the WUSA's preseason training regimen between March 16-22, the U-23, U-21 and U-19 national amateur teams will compete against both WUSA clubs for a seven-day period at the ARCO Olympic Training facility in Chula Vista, CA.
Baker (Calgary, Alberta, Canada), a rising senior, helped the Tennessee U-23 ODP squad capture the regional title in Raleigh, N.C. last June. Moller (Boras, Sweden), a rising sophomore, didn't join the state team until the national tournament but along with fellow Lady Tiger Baker, helped lead the Tennessee squad to a runner-up finish in Tampa.
"It's a great opportunity for them to be seen at the next level," said U of M head coach Brooks Monaghan. "It's an honor for the ladies and it will help set the standard for the future of our program."
Baker and Moller were the Lady Tigers' top two scorers last season. Baker paced Memphis with six goals and 14 points while Moller added five goals and 12 points but started every single contest as a true freshman in 2001.
