Memphis edges ECU, 3-2, in Volleyball

GREENVILLE, NC - The University of Memphis Tiger volleyball team recorded its first 20-win season since 1994 with a 3-2 victory over East Carolina here Friday evening. The Tigers improve to 20-8 on the year and 7-8 in Conference USA. ECU drops to 8-19 overall, 3-12 in C-USA with the loss.
ECU opened the match with a 30-27 win over Memphis in game, but the Tigers rallied and recorded the 30-25 victory in game two. The match advantage went back to ECU as the Pirates defeated Memphis, 30-27, in the third game. Memphis won the fourth game, 30-20, forcing the fifth and deciding game, which Memphis won, 17-15.
Seniors Ginger Garrett and Emily Eichmann led Memphis in hitting with 19 kills apiece. Eichmann recorded a .378 hitting mark, followed by Garrett's .234 hitting effort. Both also recorded nine digs apiece. Brittany Barnett and Shella Neba also recorded double-digit kills with 13 and 11, respectively. Senior Adrianne Edmonds led the defense with 10 digs.
Whitney Brawner led ECU in kills with 15 and Robyn Drewes recorded the best hitting effort in the match with 13 kills and no errors in 19 attempts for a .684 hitting clip. Sarah Vick also recorded double digit kills with 12. Brawner also led the match in digs with 15.
The Tigers will travel to Charlotte, N.C. to face the 49ers on Saturday. Memphis will close out its season on Sunday at High Point University. The Tigers, currently ranked ninth in Conference USA, will participate in the C-USA Tournament, Nov. 15-18, at the University of Houston. The bracket will be announced Sunday evening.
