Carbondale, Ill. -
The men's and women's cross country teams travel to Carbondale this weekend for the 27th annual Saluki Invitational hosted by Southern Illinois University. Memphis is one of 20 teams scheduled to participate. Other schools include Southern Illinois, Southeast Missouri, UT-Martin, Austin Peay, Murray State, St. Louis, Spalding, Texas-Corpus Christi, Greenville, Eastern Illinois, Missouri-Kansas City, Indiana-Ft. Wayne, Illinois State, Indiana State, Bradley, Rend Lake, Western Illinois and Belmont. The event is part of homecoming festivities this weekend at Southern Illinois.
The Memphis women are looking for their second consecutive victory. Paced by Wendy Ragle, the women captured the Arkansas State/Pepsi Invitational last weekend in Jonesboro, Ark. Ragle has three top-three finishes in four events this season. This event will feature a rematch between Ragle and Kaci Pilcher of Southeast Missouri. Pilcher has edged Ragle by mere seconds in two previous events this year.
The Memphis men will look to rebound from last week's 21st place showing at the Meet Of Champions in New Rochelle, N.Y. Balasz Lazslo has been the Tigers best performer this season including a 52nd place finish in New York last week in an event that featured some of the nation's best runners.
Both the men's and women's teams have just one more event after this one to prepare for the Conference USA Championship scheduled for October 27 in Greenville, N.C.
