MEMPHIS, TENN. - The University of Memphis Lady Tiger soccer team (5-4-0, 1-2-0) shutout the Blue Demons of DePaul (2-6-0, 1-2-0) on Friday evening, 2-0. Senior defender Candice Spiniolas made the switch to forward for the match and made the most of her opportunities, striking twice in Memphis' first conference victory of the season. This win marks the third shutout of the 2000 season.
Memphis'defense was a virtual wall allowing two shots the entire match while the Lady Tiger offense pounded away with 21.
The first half featured nine shots by the Lady Tigers compared with zero for the Blue Demons. Spiniolas eventually found the net in the 52nd minute after getting a pass from freshman forward Jennifer Goff, to put Memphs ahead, 1-0. Ten minutes later, Spiniolas fired back off a feed from senior defender Tori Winslett with a 21-foot blast which beat the keeper and put the Lady Tigers up for good, 2-0.
Memphis will now host the Golden Eagles of Marquette on Sunday, September 24th at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at Echles Field. That match will be the Lady Tigers next available chance to even their Conference USA record which stands at 1-2-0, thus far.
