Chicago, Ill.-- - The University of Memphis women's track team wrapped up its 2000 Conference USA Indoor Championships with a ninth-place finish despite competing with no jumpers at the event. Three school records also fell over the weekend, two of which had been set recently.
Sophomore Barbara Wine (Pampa, Texas/Pampa) had the team's highest finish with a second-place finish in the shot put with a season-best 14.03 meter (46-0.50) effort. That mark broke the school record which was set by Wine and current teammate Carla Hardy (College Park, GA/Benjamin Banneker) last year at 45-5. Also establishing a new mark in the women's 800-meter run was freshman Julie Wright (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald). Wright finished fifth in her heat with a school-record time of 2:19.71.
Junior Kameilah Amaya (Carbondale, Ill./Carbondale) had the team's highest finish on the first day of competition with a fourth-place finish in the weight throw where she again broke her own school record with a toss of 17.17 meters (56-4).
Senior sprinter Natalie Martindale (Kingstown, Jamaica) finished sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.28. She also finished seventh in the 55-meter dash in 7.09, her fastest time of the season.
The meet was won by South Florida with 131 points. Houston was second with 108.5, Tulane third with 106, Marquette fourth with 80.5 and Cincinnati fifth with 52 points. Southern Miss finished sixth with 37.5 points, Louisville seventh with 35.5, UAB eighth with 24, then Memphis with 21 points.
