Butler was one of the best shooting guards in the history of Tiger basketball. A Memphis native and a graduate of Kingsbury High School, Butler came to then Memphis State in the fall of 1964.

After spending one season playing for the freshman team, Butler became an immediate starter for the varsity and played in 25 games in 1965-66. The sharpshooter averaged 19.2 points per game in his first varsity season and made 114-of-132 free throws attempted. His 86.4 free throw percentage remains the second highest in Memphis history and his 85.9 percent of free throws made the following season ranks third.

During his junior campaign, 1966-67, Butler averaged 17.1 points per contest and finished the season with a total of 445 points scored. The Tigers finished 17-9 under new head coach Moe Iba and were invited to play in the post season in the NIT.

Butler took the team on his shoulders again as a senior and for the third consecutive season led the Tigers in scoring. He averaged a career high 19.4 points per game during his last year and finished his career with 1,409 points and a spot on the All-Missouri Valley Conference first team.

Butler’s 17 field goals made against Xavier ranks as the second highest total in school history and his career 85.5 free throw percentage is an all-time Tiger record. He ranks 16th on the career scoring list with 1,409 points.
