David Diehl enters his third season with the Tigers in 2025. He was promoted to offensive line coach in Jan. 2025 after spending the previous two seasons as offensive quality control.
During the 2024 season, Diehl helped coach a Memphis offensive line that ranked 12th in the country in scoring offense (35.7), 16th in total offense (444.5), 17th in third down conversion percentage (.461), 20th in passing offense (270.5) and 26th in offensive first downs (300). The Tigers went on to finish the season with an 11-2 record, that included a 42-37 win over West Virginia in the Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl.
Individually, offensive lineman Xavier Hill was named First Team All-AAC while offensive linemen Jonah Gambill and Trent Holler earned Third Team accolades.
In 2023, Diehl helped guide the Tigers to a 10-3 season, including a win in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, 36-26, over Iowa State. The 10-win season was just the fifth in program history. Offensively, Memphis ranked sixth in the NCAA in scoring offense (39.4), 10th in passing offense (306.5), 14th in total offense (458.5) and 17th in team passing efficiency (154.79) and completion percentage (.667).
Individually, offensive lineman Xavier Hill earned Second-Team All-AAC honors.
The 2022 season saw Diehl help Memphis to a 38-10 win over Utah State in the SERVPRO First Responders Bowl. The Tiger offense also ranked fifth nationally in fewest penalties (53), sixth in fewest penalties per game (4.08) and 21st in scoring offense (35.3).
Prior to his collegiate coaching career, Diehl spent 12 years in the broadcasting sector of sports as a co-host of “Opening Drive” on SiriusXM NFL Radio and “A Football Sunday,” an NFL weekly pregame show on New York’s top sports radio station. During this time, he also spent time in the booth as an analyst for CBS Sports Network and provided in-game analysis for various college football matchups.
Since 2016, Diehl has offered his services to RWJ Barnabas Health as an Ambassador & Head of the Morahan Health Assessment Center for Athletes where he helps manage the cardiac and concussion screenings for athletes in New Jersey ranging from grade school to high school as well as student-athletes at Rutgers University. He has also served as a public speaker at schools, universities and recreation centers for the largest healthcare system on the east coast.
Diehl spent 11 seasons as an offensive lineman for the New York Giants where he was a two-time Super Bowl Champion (XLII, XLVI) as the starting left tackle. After getting drafted in the fifth round of the 2003 NFL Draft, Diehl went on to start in 164 games (tied 13th best in program history) along with all 11 postseason games with the Giants.
Diehl was selected to the 2009 Pro Bowl and was named a Second Team All-Pro during the 2008 season. Since retiring from the NFL, Diehl has been an NFL Draft Prospect Seminar Coach to help provide detailed explanations of how to prepare and what to expect when players are entering the draft and combine, create and run specific drills to help enhance player awareness and lead detailed workouts to assist players based on skill position.
A five-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Diehl played four seasons at the University of Illinois where he was named to the All-Big Ten Team in 2002 and later inducted into the Chicago Sports Hall of the Fame in 2014.
