Late Push Falls Flat in Tigers' Loss at UTSA
Mar 01, 2026 | Women's Basketball
SAN ANTONIO – Memphis women's basketball dropped a 67-55 contest to UTSA on Sunday afternoon at Convocation Center.
The Tigers (9-20, 3-13 American) battled for 40 minutes, trailing by just four in the final minutes before the Roadrunners moved to 8-4 at home and 13-14 overall. Daejah Richmond again paced Memphis with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals.
After winning the rebounding battle in the first game between these teams, the Tigers were mauled on the glass, conceding 14 offensive rebounds and 48 overall. Despite seven offensive boards of their own, Memphis had no second chance points, shooting just 32% against one of the conference's top defenses.
The first quarter was ultimately the most lopsided; the Tigers fell behind 13-5 early after making two of their first nine field goals. They battled back through jumpers from Richmond and Cori Allen but trailed, 18-10, after one frame.
After shooting just 25% and forcing only two turnovers in the first frame, Memphis kicked into gear on both ends, shooting 46% in the second period thanks in part to six forced turnovers and four fast break points. The score was 30-25 entering the second half before UTSA pushed their lead out to 42-26 as the Tigers missed their first eight shots of the period.
Amauri Williams would spark a 9-1 run for the visitors, scoring nine of her 11 points in the third quarter as Memphis made seven of their next nine droughts following the drought. The Roadrunners scored just five points across an eight-minute stretch in the third and fourth quarters, but the Tigers couldn't turn their stout defense into a momentum-swinging run.
Richmond scored the first seven of the fourth quarter for Memphis, including a left-handed layup through traffic to cut it to 55-51 with four minutes to play, but UTSA would get their kill shot in the form of a 9-0 run to earn the victory.
Six Roadrunners recorded six-plus rebounds, led by Cheyenne Rowe with nine. Idara Udo added 18 points and eight rebounds. On the Memphis side, Paris Gaines had nine points, six rebounds and two steals.
The loss eliminated the Tigers from contention in the 10-team conference tournament beginning next week. They will be back home to take on UAB on Wednesday, March 4, at 7 p.m. at Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
