WICHITA, Kan. – Memphis women's basketball dropped a tight contest to Wichita State, 66-59, on Tuesday night at Charles Koch Arena.
The lead changed hands nine times throughout the course of the game, and the Tigers (7-12, 1-5 American) tied the game with 2:01 remaining through Chaé Harris, but the hosts closed on a 9-2 run to clinch the victory.
Abby Cater led Wichita State (4-16, 1-6 American) behind a program-record 42 points. A 12.9% three-point shooter this season, the graduate student hit four threes and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the foul stripe. No other player had more than seven points.
The Tigers shot just 31% from the field, getting to the line 25 times but converting just 56% of their free throws. Harris, Tamya Smith and Daejah Richmond each had 11 points to tie the team lead.
Memphis started the game on a 9-0 run as the Shockers went four minutes before their first bucket. Cater got going behind two threes later in the quarter as the Tigers endured a four-minute scoring drought of their own. Amauri Williams stole a pocket pass and threw a hit-ahead pass to Richmond to give the visitors an 18-16 lead at the end of one period.
The second quarter saw just 20 combined points; Cater was held to just 1-of-5 shooting, but the Tigers made just three buckets as Wichita grabbed a two-point lead at the half. After six turnovers in both the first and second quarter, Memphis took much better care of the ball after the break, giving it away just four times and forcing eight.
A 13-4 Shocker run halfway through the third quarter helped them take a six-point lead into the final frame, but the Tigers quickly made it a two-point game behind two Smith buckets. Trailing by four, Harris got free on an inbounds play and connected from behind-the-arc through the foul to tie the game with two minutes remaining. Cater would once again deliver for WSU, completing a traditional three-point play and finishing a running floater to put the game to bed for Wichita.
Winning the turnover battle was undone by the Shockers grabbing 52 rebounds to just 39 for the Tigers. Six different players grabbed five or more rebounds for the hosts.
Memphis will be back home this Saturday, January 24, to take on UTSA at 2 p.m.
