Haggerty Named to Midseason List for Jerry West Award, Oscar Robertson Trophy
Feb 04, 2025 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis men's basketball sophomore guard PJ Haggerty continues to reel in watch list recognition for national awards, earning two nods this week.
On Monday, Haggerty was one of 50 selected by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association for its 2024-25 Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List.
In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation's oldest award and the only one named after a former player.
On Tuesday, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame tabbed him as one of its 10 midseason candidates for the Jerry West Award.
Named after Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual honor, in its 10th year, recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men's college basketball.
Haggerty is averaging 21.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.1 steals per game for No. 17 Memphis (18-4, 8-1 American). He's a four-time AAC Player of the Week this season and is the No. 4 scorer in the nation entering Tuesday.
The Crosby, Texas native leads the AAC in minutes per game (36.5), free throws made (145) and free throws attempted (180).
Haggerty ranks second in the conference with 15 games of 20-plus points and is coming off 26 points, eight rebounds and five assists in Sunday's 86-83 road win at Rice.
Players can play their onto and off each of these lists at any point in the season.
The Oscar Robertson Trophy winner is to be announced at the NCAA Men's Final Four in San Antonio, from April 5-7.
Fans are encouraged to participate in Fan Voting in both of the remaining rounds starting on Friday, February 7, on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.
In March, the Top 10 list for the Jerry West Award will be narrowed to just five, and in late March, the five finalists will be presented to West's family, Meyers Drysdale, and the Hall of Fame's selection committees, where winners will be selected. The Selection Committees for the Jerry West and Ann Meyers Drysdale Awards are composed of top men's and women's college basketball personnel, including media members, head coaches, sports information directors, and Hall of Famers.
The winners of the 2025 West and Meyers Drysdale Awards will be presented on a to-be-determined date, along with the other four members of the Men's and Women's Starting Five.
The Tigers will be back in action in front of their home fans on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to welcome Tulsa to town, Haggerty's former team. On Sunday, they will host Temple at 1 p.m.
